EJE DRS6-6-1500 #501  Contributor's Pick!
Built in January of 1949 for the Bessemer & Lake Erie as their #402, this Baldwin DRS6-6-1500 was acquired by the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Rwy along with sister loco #500 in March of 1956. In Baldwin language, the "DRS" part of the model translates into diesel road switcher, the "6-6" into a 6 axles with all 6 powered and "1500" represents the 1500 hp.Date is approximate and an unknown photographer captured this unit.

Fred Stuckmann General Great shot. 2/8/2014 8:06:12 PM
Alan Fricker General I don't remember seeing these-I was too young-but I did see some of the EMD-ized BLW centercabs. I bet that is a centercab in the background in the old paint scheme. 2/8/2014 8:43:50 PM
Robert Farkas General I believe at least one of these operated into 1972. 2/10/2014 9:59:41 PM
Mark Bridgwater General A correction to your model number translation: 6-6 means 6 axles with 6 of them powered. There was also a 6-4 which meant 6 axles with only 4 powered (Center axles were idlers, or an "A-1-A" configuration, as it is called.) 6/7/2015 9:41:58 PM
