| One of the more unusual feedwater configurations is this "cobra hooded" Coffin type. Not sure why the photo is labeled "Schenectady Locomotive Works" at the bottom unless it was visiting for some reason since this was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio in 1928. It had 63" drivers and could develop an impressive 240 psi of boiler pressure for its 28"x30" cylinders and produced a respectable 66,500 lb of tractive effort but according to several sources, Boston & Maine were unhappy with its performance - leakages and derailing often when backing. During WWII, Boston & Maine sold their problems to Southern Pacific and Santa Fe who were in dire need of power out west. Date and location are approximate. No photographer listed. |
