SP 4-8-4 #4437 - Southern Pacific  Contributor's Pick!
Even in this poor quality photo and under streamlined sheeting, the distinctive Lima look is evident. Specifics (with the help of Raymond Jones in correcting some misinformation-see comment below) - Lima built in 1937, GS-3 class, 80" drivers, oil-fired, impressive 280 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, 460,000 lb engine weight, 64,365 lb tractive effort. Originally the "GS" in its class name stood for "Golden State" but when the WWII War Production Board refused SP more Golden State passenger locos, SP changed the "GS" to mean "General Service", thereby getting 10 more locos. The entire GS-3 class was retired between 1954-58. Albert A Schrum photo. No location or date was listed for this photo but with Ricardo Montijo's help (see comment below), the location has been identiied as San Francisco. Thanks for the help, Ricardo!
