SP 2-10-2 #3724 - Southern Pacific  Contributor's Pick!       
Long and sleek are appropriate descriptive words for this Baldwin Santa Fe type locomotive #3742 built in October of 1923 and matching its tender. The loco was a hard worker generating 75,150 lb of tractive force. When its days started waning on the SP, it was leased to Texas & New Orleans as their #901starting in 1950. The loco was "vacated" in January of 1953 and by March it was scrapped at the Houston yard. Specifics - F-5 class, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 29.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 397,900 lb, tractive effort of 75,145 lb. Most of the F-5s went to the Texas & New Orleans lines, where they worked until retirement in 1949-1956. No location, date or photographer was listed for this photo.
