WSOR local parked, silent and dark, on the former MILW rails on the north side of Hwy. MM at Rhine Mills in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan Co., WI on 17 Oct. '15. The small community of Rhine Mills was adjacent to a quarry and lime kiln built by the Sheboygan Valley Land and Lime Co. I don’t know if there was a station here, but there was a spur off to service the quarry and lime kiln. Rhine Mills included a school, saw mill, grain mill, blacksmith, general store, saloon, boarding house, et al. The remnants of the lime kilns still stand and are easily visible from the hwy. about 1200 feet of west of the grade crossing. This site was approximately Milepost 148 on MILW’s Milwaukee to Iron Mountain line. I had encountered this train at Elkhart Lake earlier in the day. I did not stick around there because I thought this train would soon be on its way back toward Plymouth and points south. I waited in Plymouth, hoping to shoot the train as it passed the former C&NW and MILW depots there, for 5 hours but the train never came through. After giving up and heading home, I was surprised, and disappointed, to discover it parked here. Oh well. |
