| CN local, headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna, approaches the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 Jun. '16. They are passing some new apartments or condominiums erected last year at the former site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing, makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in the Flats at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of a new factory here in ’04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block. |
