I still cant believe how amazing the world famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania looks! Following extensive tree trimming in the spring of 2016, the entire view of the curve is visible, making images like this possible. On Friday June 24, 2016, eastbound van train 22W drifts downgrade towards downtown Altoona, PA on track one while westbound intermodal 21V climbs the grade on track two. The power for 22W was NS #9249 (C40-9W), NS #8785 (C40-9), and NS #1092 (SD70ACe). In this photo, you can see the power on 21V, which was NS #6782 (SD60M), NS #6980 (SD60E). NS #6304 (SD40E) and NS #6306 (SD40E) were on the rear. In this photo, the right side of the curve (railroad west) is actually 122 feet higher in elevation vs. the left side (railroad east). |
