NKP Class Leader GP30 and RS3 Editors Pick! Contributor's Pick!
The Nickel Plate Road was late to dieselize. Still running 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotives until mid-1957, they were one of the last major railroads to run steam. The year is 1963, however, and steam is gone. Here, class leader GP30, NKP #900, sits in Conneaut, Ohio coupled to ALCO RS-3 NKP #544 on Wednesday May 29, 1963. NKP 900 still lives today and is on display at the Mad River and NKP Museum in Bellevue, Ohio. Photo by James Pope.
