PRR Westbound Helpers, 1948
Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here are two Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin. The first is a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas," the second is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod." After the train passes through the tunnels at Gallitzin, both of these locomotives will uncouple and head back to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-3).
