Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here is a Pennsylvania Railroad L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" steam locomotive helping a pair of GM-EMD E-7 Diesels pull the "Southwestern Mail" up the Allegheny Mountains on its way to Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, and points West. The famous stone "horseshoe" is visible at the left; it was destroyed when the Park Service took over. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-9).
