PRR 9838, EF-15A, 1965 Editors Pick!
Winter. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 03 January 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9838, #9844-B, and #9834. All are EFP-15's built by EMD in 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. They are pulling an 83-car train under the 4th Street Bridge, and are about to begin climbing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Bringing-up the rear are "pushers" #8667, #8666, and #8669. Visible on the left are a telephone box and a venerable black water tower, the last sign of the "Age of Steam" in this part of town.
