PRR 5822, BH-50, 1961
Blackhawk. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Richard R. Wallin that was taken at the 46th Street Enginehouse in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 25 May 1961. Photo Caption: "DR-12-8-3000, Pennsylvania No. 5822. Philadelphia, Pa. May 25, 1961." Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5822, another "Centipede," and a Baldwin-built switcher whose road number is not recorded. Both "Centipedes" were constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's for passenger service and rated at 3,000 horsepower each; both were later regeared for freight service and reclassified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5822 was built in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Baldwins in Action ~ On North-Eastern Railroads" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (892-49).
