Here is the fourteenth of 18 photos by Fred McLeod that are included in a souvenir brochure entitled "Horseshoe Curve; Pennsylvania Railroad; Altoona, Pa." Photo Caption: "Four Unit Freight Diesel on Downgrade." Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9511 and three more "EF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All are EF-15's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9511 was built in April of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. This A-B-B-A team is pulling a freight train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. Milepost 242 is also visible, just to the right of the lead locomotive. |
