Louisville & Nashville class J-3 2-8-2 1518 and an auxiliary water car were photographed next to the turntable at the railroad’s Julia Street Yard in New Orleans This photo was taken on 28 August 1951, near the end of L&N steam operations into the Crescent City. The class J-3 was the standard USRA Light Mikado and, at 292,000 pounds, were the heaviest steam locomotives used on the line between Mobile and New Orleans. The 1518 had been built by Alco in 1920 and was retired on 29 January 1952. |
