So rare is this unusual 4-4-6-2 wheel configuration for a "compound Mallet" that the RRPA data base had no classification for it. Built by Baldwin in August of 1909 as one of two for the ATSF, the oil burning loco and its sister had an oddball combination of dead-end variants in its feed water heater, combustion chamber, and superheater which were compromised by other design elements. After unsuccesfully working in both passengeer and freight service, the pair were converted to a more conventional 4-6-2 in August of 1915 (#1300) and October of 1915 (#1301), thus ending this oddball configuration. Original specs - serial #33708, class 1300, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" high pressure cylinders, 38x28" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 376,450 lb and tractive effort of 53,697 lb. |
