PRR BH-50, "Centipedes," 1957
BYC. Here is an original photo by Ken Douglas that was taken near the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1957. Shown here are two pairs of unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipedes." All are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. In this context, they're returning to East Altoona for yet more helper/pusher runs up "The Mountain."
