Here is the third of three original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken from the 17th Street Bridge in the Juniata section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Parked in the right foreground is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9889, an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1915 and retired in October of 1958. To the left of it is engine #267, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in December of 1917 and retired in June of 1957; note that its main driving rods have been removed in preparation for movement to the Recycling Center. In the background, several other steam locomotives scurry about on a crisp Winter's morning. |
