Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4294, an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during July of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1942, and retired in January of 1957 after 34 years of faithful service. In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. John S. Fisher Collection; #3 of 8. |
