PRR 809, L-1S, 1948
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 24 July 1948. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #809 and #5522. Both were built in Juniata. #809 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" constructed during May of 1917 and retired in October of 1948, while #5522 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in May of 1946 and retired March of 1952. They're about to enter one of the Gallitzin Tunnels with a passenger train bound for Johnstown and points West. Once past the tunnel, #809 will be uncoupled and head back down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona for yet another helper run. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.
