PRR 5347, K-4S, 1950
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 21 October 1950. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5347 and two more locomotives whose road numbers are not recorded. All are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." #5347 was built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in December of 1955 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, these locomotives are rockin' 'n' rollin' up the Allegheny Mountains and will soon pass through one of the Gallitzin Tunnels, whereupon the lead two engines will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further helper runs up "The Mountain." This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.
