In fact, I1sa Decapods had the distinction of being the last locomotives in steam when Pennsy finally achieved 100-percent diesel and electric operation. In November 1957, Big Steam's last stand in PRR road-haul service was on the iron ore trains headed for the furnaces of Bethlehem Steel at Bethlehem, Pa. Here, Baldwin-built I1sa 4407 doubleheads with a sister 2-10-0 upgrade near Shamokin, Pa., in the mid-1950's. Most likely, two more of their clan are shoving on the rear." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4407 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during January of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1937, and retired in October of 1959 and retired after 36 years. |
