SP 4-10-2 #5023 - Southern Pacific
Unique 3 cylinder and 4-10-2 wheel configuration makes this a rare locomotive. Only SP and UP tried this model - successful for SP (who called it a Southern Pacific type) but not for UP (who called it an Overland type). SP 4-10-2 #5023 was built by ALCo-Schenectady in May of 1926 (serial #66795). After nearly 27 years of service, the loco was "vacated "in November of 1953 and scrapped a month later at the Sacramento Shops. Specs - oil burner, 63" drivers, impressive 225 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" and 28x32" cylinders, engine weight of 445,000 lb, tractive effort of 84,200 lb. Arthur B Johnson photo
