A proud crew poses by the impressive and long ATSF 2-10-2 #972. Built by Baldwin in February of 1904 as a compound 2-10-2 Santa Fe type steam locomotive, it was simplified at the San Bernardino Shops in August of 1918. The loco lasted on the ATSF roster until being sold for scrap to the Hyman-Michaels Company on November 4, 1949. Rebuilt specs - 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 28x32" cylinders, engine wt of 317,400 lb, tractive effort of 74,800 lb. Ralph H. Payne photo |
