Baera 1. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1949. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9684 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9684 was constructed as an EH-15 in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in December of 1966 after just 17 years of revenue service. They're pushing a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
