DRGW 2-8-8-2 #3402 - Denver & Rio Grande Western
What a powerful and massive locomotive - Denver and Reio Grande Western 2-8-8-2 #3402. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in December of 1912 as the mallet compound, DRG #1062, it was renumbered in 1924 after the DRGW re-organization to DRGW 3402. Later in 1943, it had a new boiler installed and the slide valves replaced by the piston variety. After serving for nearly 36 years, the massive loco was scrapped in August of 1948. What a pile of steel it would have made! Rebuilt specs - 57" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 26x 40" high pressure cylinders, 32x57" low pressure cylinders, engine wt of 482,500 lb, massive tractive effort of 95,244 lb. The photo is from the Tom Klinger collection. No date was given so an apporimate one was used.
