is that normal for a engine to do that and does it hurt the engine?

It really is just a chimney fire. Soot in the stack burning off when it gets too thick and too hot. No damage unless it gets out of the stack or burns for too long.

It's also a sign of poor maintenance. One reason why you see burned paint near the top center of hoods. Seen this many a time in the yards to, especially if the enging sits to long and the hogger then puts the throttle wide open when starting. Heard the term "Cleaning out the cowwebs" used to.

This also happens when all the fuel isn't completely burned away in the combustion chamber and ignites in the Exhaust. A Blown Turbocharger will result in the same effect even on an EMD.

Thats funny as hell! Can't that damage the locomotive? or burn and start a fire on the cars behind it?

Yo man, HOT looken engine. I have always thought of painting an engine to look like a 50's street rod, but who needs to paint on wild fire flaims when you got real ones. Lucky shot but looks ummm, HOT!

Steve: When I was a kid we used to burn plastic models. They produced the same kind of flame and inky black smoke. Got a couple of HO locos laying around you don't need anymore? :-) Mike

I think just about all GE's will do that. I had that engine as my leader about a year ago on one of our UP trains. BTW, that's class engine as well.

Thank you, Ryan! Fiortunatley this pyrotechnic display subsided once the train got rolling (though it took a while. It had stopped for a red board; every time the engineer tried to accelerate he'd get this mini volcano; then he'd back off the throttle. It happened 6-8 times in first couple of minutes. Since they were short, quick bursts it was a trick trying to photograph them. This pic is the best one out of three attempts).

Photo was on the home page again today. The flame reminds me of another GE on the former C&O. Sometimes a train had to go over scales at a VERY slow speed and sure enough, one GE was blazing out the stack as well. Not nearly so "bold" as this one, I have to admit, but it was still rather startling to see flames coming out the stack. This is one of the best photos ever and thanks for sharing it with us.
