Rick Hoar General Cool chimeny fire! Need a rolaids? 11/26/2004 4:18:28 PM
steven langsford General is that normal for a engine to do that and does it hurt the engine? 11/26/2004 5:04:42 PM
Rick Hoar General It really is just a chimney fire. Soot in the stack burning off when it gets too thick and too hot. No damage unless it gets out of the stack or burns for too long. 11/26/2004 5:38:11 PM
Jeffrey Faherty General Marshmellows anyone? 11/26/2004 9:23:09 PM
Jason Breakiron General Gives new meaning to "All fired up" LOL Nice Shot! 11/27/2004 1:47:29 AM
tim heckman General you got to love those GE's they can sure put on a show guess no more chili for lunch 12/20/2004 10:49:10 AM
Louis Brzuchalski General It's also a sign of poor maintenance. One reason why you see burned paint near the top center of hoods. Seen this many a time in the yards to, especially if the enging sits to long and the hogger then puts the throttle wide open when starting. Heard the term "Cleaning out the cowwebs" used to. 2/7/2005 7:15:12 PM
Mike Rapchak Jr. General Thanks to all who commented here - I'm glad you enjoyed the photo! :) Mike 5/15/2005 11:40:08 PM
Sam Davey General wish i could see that sometime 6/13/2005 11:46:44 PM
Mike Rapchak Jr. General Sam, Keep an eye out for C39/40-8s. They seem to be the units that most often put on these displays. :) Mike 6/14/2005 4:07:55 PM
Gregg Pullano General Only on a GE! 12/31/2005 11:55:48 PM
Gregg Pullano General Anyone up for some smores? LOL 12/31/2005 11:56:01 PM

William Duvall General So much for the emissions standards! 3/24/2006 12:24:05 AM
Virgil Fitzpatrick General This also happens when all the fuel isn't completely burned away in the combustion chamber and ignites in the Exhaust. A Blown Turbocharger will result in the same effect even on an EMD. 3/31/2006 4:09:56 PM
D-F Strong-Baker General Thats funny as hell! Can't that damage the locomotive? or burn and start a fire on the cars behind it? 5/25/2006 6:03:35 PM
John J. Poshepny General I'll take 2 Hot Dogs. Nice Catch. 10/31/2006 9:48:52 PM
Dan Morgan General Yo man, HOT looken engine. I have always thought of painting an engine to look like a 50's street rod, but who needs to paint on wild fire flaims when you got real ones. Lucky shot but looks ummm, HOT! 1/2/2007 1:28:55 AM
Steven Kakoczki General I wish you do that on HO models...LOL! think of the fun! 5/22/2007 12:02:38 AM
Mike Rapchak Jr. General Steve: When I was a kid we used to burn plastic models. They produced the same kind of flame and inky black smoke. Got a couple of HO locos laying around you don't need anymore? :-) Mike 7/21/2007 3:53:46 PM
David Nutter General That beaufitul!!!!!!! 8/11/2007 10:31:08 PM

Collin Reinhart General (: Nice Photo:) It is a shame that NS retired almost all of the C39s. 2/21/2008 6:10:15 PM

Jim Bruce General To the Engine: "Sir, I Chalenge you to a belching contest!, do you acept, or are you a Coward?" The engine: "would a coward do this?" Great Shot !!! 4/26/2008 2:29:57 PM
Ryan Koertge General I hope the firetrucks are around. Cool shot 7/28/2008 9:23:31 PM
Mike Rapchak Jr. General Thank you, Ryan! Fiortunatley this pyrotechnic display subsided once the train got rolling (though it took a while. It had stopped for a red board; every time the engineer tried to accelerate he'd get this mini volcano; then he'd back off the throttle. It happened 6-8 times in first couple of minutes. Since they were short, quick bursts it was a trick trying to photograph them. This pic is the best one out of three attempts). 7/28/2008 10:06:23 PM

Rev. Jonathan Spurlock General Photo was on the home page again today. The flame reminds me of another GE on the former C&O. Sometimes a train had to go over scales at a VERY slow speed and sure enough, one GE was blazing out the stack as well. Not nearly so "bold" as this one, I have to admit, but it was still rather startling to see flames coming out the stack. This is one of the best photos ever and thanks for sharing it with us. 8/28/2019 2:37:59 PM
Mason Soliday General As seen on the homepage 6/23/2023 2:42:20 PM
