A Union Pacific unit fly ash train is seen from the Olympic Blvd bridge waiting on a clear signal to continue south to Pier F in Long Beach. Fly ash is the finely divided mineral residue resulting from the combustion of coal in electric generating plants. It is inorganic, incombustible matter present in the coal that has been fused during combustion into a glassy amorphous structure. It used to be released into the atmosphere, but is now collected and used to make cement. |
