On top of the DeRussy Battery at Fort Monroe an old railway cart sits among other scrap. This cart was probably used to shuttle ammunition back and fourth between the large guns. I do not know the gauge and the Batteries here were built between 1891 and 1920. During World War II the guns here protected the James River from German U-boats, and possibly helped to sink one near Fort Wool! The logo for the 5th Coast Artillery is also a logo on the computer game railroad tycoon. |
