John Batiste Nepveux |
Description: |
Southern Pacific engineer John Batiste Nepveux was born in Saint Martinville, Louisiana on 21 June 1903 and went to work for the SP (Texas & New Orleans) in 1923. By the time Amtrak began in 1971 he was the regular engineer on the SUNSET between New Orleans and Lafayette. (Since the train only ran three times a week, he was the train’s ONLY regular engineer!) Here he was, standing next to former Union Pacific E8A 929 (Amtrak 326) prior to the train’s departure from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in October 1971. He retired on 20 June 1973, the day before his 70th birthday, with 50 years of service and passed away on 29 October 1979 at age 76. (approximate date of photo) |
