Gaugler oils D16sb steam engine built at Juniata Shop, Altoona, in 1905." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1223 is a D-16SB (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata during November of 1905 that's presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Also depicted are Strasburg Rail Road 0-6-0 switcher #31 and the Cumberland Valley Railroad's "Pioneer."

Here is the front cover of a ten-page cover article by William M. Moedinger, Jr., entitled "The Road To Paradise." It was published originally on the April 1961 issue of "Trains" magazine. Shown here is Strasburg Rail Road engine #31, an 0-6-0 shifter built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1908. According to Gary Everhart, "it has worn several numbers through the years": originally it was Grand Trunk Western's #1708; then Canadian National's #7157 circa 1923, renumbered CN #7240 in 1952, and renumbered CN #7312 in 1957; then purchased, reconditioned, and renumbered SRC #31 in 1960 ~ some 52 years after it first hit the rails!

Shown here is SRC engine #31, an 0-6-0 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1908 ~ some 55 years earlier! It has uncoupled from our excursion train in Paradise (where the SRC connects with the Pennsylvania Railroad) and is passing around it to the other end of our train, where it will recouple and then pull the train back to the Strasburg Station.
