Title:
Altoona Shops Inspection Trip, Page 18, 1981
Description:
Here is page 15 of a 17-page version of the Pennsylvania Railroad's 13-page booklet entitled "Altoona Shops Inspection Trip ~ Sunday, May 16, 1937." It appeared in the September 1981 issue of "The Keystone" magazine, page 18. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "From a 'Fan's' perspective, E-3sd No. 5011 was perhaps the most interesting locomotive on display at Altoona. No. 5011 was one of the few, and very likely the only, E-3sd's to retain the old style cylinders while being equipped with the new steel pilot beam." #5011 is an E-3SD (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata as an E-3D during 1910, rebuilt as an E-3SD in June of 1913, and retired in April of 1940. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Assigned to the Altoona Works, No. 436 was one of several B-8a's employed in the Altoona area." #436 is a B-8A (0-6-0T) tank switcher built in Juniata as a Class B during 1912, rebuilt as a B-8A in June of 1924, and retired in October of 1956 after 44 years of faithful service.
