A Faked Meet of The Twin Cities Zephyrs |
Description: |
This is a publicity shot of a meet was made in the darkroom, i.e., it never happen as shown. The trains were built by EMC/Budd and delivered in Apri11935. The power cars were diesels and carried a model number AA and, at least initially, could not be disconnected from the train easily. The first A in the model number I assume stood for first series (the second series were Es) and the second A stood for A-unit as opposed to B-unit. Train 9901 became The Sam#Houston Zephyr and was destroyed by fire on 12/19/44. Train 9902 became The Ozark State Zephyr and retired 2/54 and scrapped 4/56. Exact date and location of the picture(s) is unknown but certainly soon after the trains were put into service in 1935 and was taken along the Mississippi River bluffs in Illinois (my guess) or Wisconsin. |

CB&Q 9903 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 9903, named INJUN JOE, at Overland Park, Kansas on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9903 was ordered in March 1935, delivered by Budd in October 1935. It was built specifically for the Saint Louis - Burlington Iowa service and named the Mark Twain Zephyr. It was retired around 1958 and sold to Frank Dashner in June 1960 for use as a restaurant who died before that plan was implemented. His estate sold the train to Ernie Hays for $6,500.00 and it was displayed at the Midwest Old Threshers Association, Mount Pleasant, Iowa until the early 1970's, when it was sold to Alex Barkett of Building Leasing Corporation International, who also died before implementing any plans for the train. The train's ownership passed to Civic Plaza National Bank. In 1984, Dave Stimson, a player for the Kansas City Chiefs, purchased the equipment. After declaring bankruptcy late in 1987, the train was sold to John C. Lowe. He and two other individuals formed the Mark Twain Corporation, which was headed by Mr. Ronald. This group started the monumental task of trying to restore the train, but ran into challenges along the way. The train was stored in the Joliet, Illinois area awaiting additional investors to help fund its completion. |

Built for the CB&Q in 1935, this EMC engine and cars in the Mark Twain Zephyr have led a colorful and sometimes neglected life. The train set bounced from one private owner to another until Greg Vreeland of the Wisconsin Great Northen tourist train purchased it on February 19, 2020 with major plans to restore it to running service. CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe" |
Description: |
The power unit, "Injun Joe", was part of a fixed articulated train that originally ran between St Louis, MO and Burlington, IA. However, it was used on several CB&Q routes until retirement in April of 1958. The Budd Company designed and built the streamlined, articulated set originally containing four cars carrying names from Mark Twain's writings. This car was powered by a 660 hp, 8-cylinder, 2-cycle Winton 201A Diesel engine designed by General Motors, and built by the Winton Engine Division of Electro Motive Corporation. It ran on ordinary fuel oil and operated with no spark plugs or ignition system, combustion being accomplished solely through high compression. The engine directly powered a General Electric GT-534 main generator, which provided current to two, GE model 716 traction motors mounted on the first truck. The lead truck had 36-inch wheels for traction, while all the others only had 30-inch wheels. The gear ratio of the power truck was 52:25 for a rated maximum speed of 117 miles per hour. |
