C&NW F-M H10-44 1064 |
Description: |
Chicago & North Western Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 1064 at Proviso, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built January 1950 ( c/n 10L285 ) on F-M Order LD-76, it was retired August 19, 1976 and scrapped by C&NW at Oelwein, Iowa. It was powered by a 6 cylinder Opposed Piston diesel engine, had 68:14 gear ratio, was rated at 1,000 horsepower, 240,000 pounds operating weight. It exhibits a Phase I carbody, the generally accepted spotting feature is the overhanging roof at the rear of the cab. However, this is not necessarily an indication of an H10-44 versus an H12-44, as the upgrade from 1000 hp to 1200 hp was a simple change of engine rpm from 800 to 850, while retaining the Phase I carbody. |
