Whiskey River's MoW diesel, "Santa Fe" 2416 |
Description: |
This engine, seldom seen in operation by visitors, is used almost exclusively for track work. It saw heavy use last year when flooding rains in August caused several washouts on the Whiskey River. |

"Gracy" at the Whiskey River Railway roundhouse |
Description: |
After I photographed Gracy at the station, I assumed it had departed with another load of passengers like usual. However, after boarding 1919 (second train behind it after that of "Melody Ranch Special"), here it was uncoupled from its coaches and sitting outside the roundhouse. |

Closer look at "Oakland Acorn" and crew passing our train |
Description: |
This locomotive was built by George Reddington in 1950. When first in service on the Whiskey River, it had a metal cab and running boards and was lettered "Denver & Rio Grande" on the tender. Per photos in my family's albums, this appearance lasted only about a year in the early '90s. |

Whiskey River 1919 chugs around the curve heading for the tunnel |
Description: |
This stretch, almost back to the station, is one of the few places where Whiskey River engineers often open up the throttle a bit, which combined with a slight upgrade generates some stack talk from the 16" gauge engines which are typically very quiet the rest of the way. |

Toooooooot! Toot! |
Description: |
This is a popular spot to shoot this 16" gauge light railway, as they come down the back stretch on the return to the Little Amerricka park grounds. A slight uphill grade toward the tunnel makes for some stack talk from the steam locomotives, and there's always a whistle salute! The four tracks here belie the simple nature of the Whiskey River Railway's layout. Train is on the inbound main, to the right is the old outbound main (which, like the inbound main, goes through the tunnel), branching off of it is the "storage tunnel" lead (where the coaches are parked when not in use), then to the far right is the current outbound main. Trains pass through here after having gone through the Whistle Stop Campground loop (opened in 2017), then out to the farm fields before looping back to the amusement park. |

"Gracy" brings its train back from the Whistle Stop Campground |
Description: |
Note the electronic bell on the ground, which provides the auditory warning for this crossing (the "toy" mechanical bells on top of the signals are disabled). This is unique on the Whiskey River Railway, the other crossings either use the "toy" bells or have full-size mechanical ones mounted in their place. |

Outbound "Gracy" meets inbound "Oakland Acorn" |
Description: |
Or "Meeting of the 12s" as both engines carry the number 12. I've yet to get an answer as to if there's a story behind that. Most of the Whiskey River Railway's "prototype" freight rolling stock is based on either open gondolas or livestock cars (since those seem to be most suited to carrying passengers) and lettered for D&RGW, C&NW or Milwaukee Road. |

Gracy's train, complete with red D&RGW caboose |
Description: |
Gracy is lettered for the Rio Grande Southern (which to my knowledge, in real life never rostered any Atlantics). When it first arrived on the Whiskey River Railway, "Oakland Acorn" was lettered D&RGW. All of the 16" gauge rolling stock not lettered "Whiskey River Railway" is either lettered for those two Rocky Mountain roads, or represent a more local flavor with C&NW and Milwaukee Road. |

At the conclusion of Whiskey River Railway Day 2021, the 1919 (after also picking up the two coaches which had been part of "Oakland Acorn"'s train on this day) made a "deadhead" run out through the tunnel, utilizing the now seldom-used portion of the outbound main between the switches where the campground loop branches off and then re-joins. |

"Little Puffer" storms around the bend past Wolf Canyon |
Description: |
This 22" gauge Cagney 4-4-0 is thought to have been built in 1904, making it older than most operational standard gauge steam locomotives! It was brought to what was then the Herbert Fleishhacker Zoo in 1925 (hence the number it carries) and operated for 53 years before being retired in 1978. It was restored to operation in 1998 and converted to natural gas firing. |

The big Pacific has now joined its ex-Milwaukee County Zoo stable-mate Atlantic No. 1916 on the RGN. Both were built by the Sandley Light Railway Equipment Works, which was based here at the RGN, so this is a homecoming of sorts for them. Formerly named for Milwaukee Journal chairman Irwin Maier (the Journal funded the purchase of the locomotives for the Zoo); upon arrival at the RGN it was renamed for former Wisconsin & Southern Railroad CEO Bill Gardner, who funded its sale "back" to RGN. |
