Dead line
Title:  Dead line
Description:  There will be a bunch of these. The Enola dead line abounded with all kinds of diesels in the mid 80s. I took several photos from points along US 11/15 hoping to capture some of the power that would soon be going to its final rest. Some nuits still wore their pre Conrail garb-note the ex EL GP 35 to the right rear.

Dead Line
Title:  Dead Line
Description:  Enola engine facility is filled with diesels awaiting their final moments. There were many SW types present, marking the end of the end cab switcher era on Conrail. New GP 15's and B23's, as well as demoted U23's and GP 38's of various types took over much of the local and yard work.

Conrail had not run an electric train in five years at this point, but there are still a lot of wires over the east end of Enola.

Flying over
Title:  Flying over
Description:  The Pennsy had the good sense after WW 1 to design for high traffic, high density railroading, not wanting to get caught off guard should there ever be another time of great demand, and wanting to avoid another situation where the USRA took over operation of the railroads, as in the war. Thus they built a lot of multi track with flyovers, rather than at grade crossings. This proved to be marvelous foresight, as the PRR handled monumental levels of all kinds of trains during WW 2. It also had the added benefit of making them a much more efficient railroad than they would have been otherwise. A pair of SD40-2s is on one of the flyovers coming off Rockville Bridge and into Enola, passing over tracks that will lead to the Middle Division.

Down the low track
Title:  Down the low track
Description:  The junction at the west end of Rockville bridge was a classic example of PRR grade separation, with tracks on a couple of levels. This one was a good way to "sneak in" a train from the west, on this track that dipped under the west end of the bridge, and avoided some of the conflict that occurred with other simultaneous moves. A new C40-8W leads this train into Enola. Looks like a U23B is the trailing unit.

Coal at CP Day
Title:  Coal at CP Day
Description:  At the east end of Enola, trains went down the Port Road Branch, which connected to the Northeast Corridor at Perryville MD. At one time, when the PRR owned that line, it was a busy piece of railroad, and the stomping ground of GG 1s. Now its SD40-2s, such as this one with a 102 car PPLX coal train.

Hump power turned loose
Title:  Hump power turned loose
Description:  Conrail at that time used GP 10/SW 1500 sets to work the west end of the yard. A pair of them is seen here entering the yard after coming over from Harrisburg with a long cut of local cars to be sorted. These sets didnt get out much; typical transfer power was GP 10s or GP 8s, which were still around in some numbers.

Hump set
Title:  Hump set
Description:  Conrail typicall used SD38s or U23C's for hump power due to their moderate horsepower that was good for working slow speed without burning up the motors. Most were mated witih MT 6 slugs, cut down from a variety of Alcos. For some reason, the Enola hump power today mates an SW 1500 with the U23C, a little different.
