Title:
BO 2-8-0C #1635 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
One of the more unusual configurations to last into the 20th century is this camelback center cab model captured by Ralph G. Dunn while the loco sat in the neighborhood of Clifton in Staten Island, NY. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in October of 1896, the locos were rebuilt in the camelback arrangement. Camelback specs - serial #15019, class E-13b, 54" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 168,000 lb, tractive effort of 38,397 lb. Some records show that the class was retired in 1927 but others have the scrapping taking place in the 1940's. The date on this photo makes the latter true.

Title:
BO 2-8-0C #1636 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Here's another example of an unusual configuration to last into the 20th century is this camelback center cab model captured!by Ralph G. Dunn. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecesor) in October of 1896, the camelback configuration was a B&O conversion from the original design. Specs - serial #15020, E-13b, 54" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 168,000 lb, tractive effort of 38,397 lb. Although some sources list the class being retired in 1927, others have the scrap dates in the 1940's. This photo suggests the latter is true.

BO 2-8-0C #1632 - Baltimore & Ohio camelback
Description:
Conflicting data on this loco. Possibly built by the B&O shops in 1904 as a class E-13b center cab camelback. Both the date and location are approximations since none were listed. Carl H. Pennrich photo

Title:
BO 4-6-0C #217 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Built by the B&O Mount Clare Shops in 1873, this was a Camel style with the entire cab placed over the boiler. This is how the loco looked to audiences at the 1939 World's Fair. No. 217 bears the name of Ross Winans, a Baltimore inventor who patented railroad wheel bearings and experimented with early railroad equipment. Winans became the B&O's Assistant Engineer of Machinery at the Mount Clare Shops. The loco is now preserved at the B&O Museum. Specs - 50-inch drivers, 65 psi boiler pressure, combined with 19x22-inch cylinders, engine weight of 129,100 pounds, and produced 8,775 pounds of tractive force. From the collection of Harold K. Vollrath.
