| One of the more unusual configurations to last into the 20th century is this camelback center cab model captured by Ralph G. Dunn while the loco sat in the neighborhood of Clifton in Staten Island, NY. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in October of 1896, the locos were rebuilt in the camelback arrangement. Camelback specs - serial #15019, class E-13b, 54" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 168,000 lb, tractive effort of 38,397 lb. Some records show that the class was retired in 1927 but others have the scrapping taking place in the 1940's. The date on this photo makes the latter true. |
