Album Info:A world first! The change of track gauge (+43%) and platform height - from narrow gauge level (35 cm) to standard gauge level (55 cm) - is an absolute novelty. When changing tracks, there is also a voltage change from 900 V direct current to 15 kV / 16.7 Hz alternating current. The change from the metre gauge to the standard gauge is made thanks to the combination of variable bogie and gauge system. The biggest challenge is to change both the track gauge and the height. The electrical voltage difference requires a change of locomotives.

Description:  At Interlaken on standard gauge behind a BLS 465 the narrow gauge coaches train waits for its departure on a test run. Like all other trains, the new GoldenPass Express has to undergo numerous tests for its approval. The special feature of this train, however, is that it has a new technology with the variable bogie. The corresponding approval procedure has therefore yet to be developed. The tests are diverse (static, dynamic) and are carried out directly by the MOB. The data is transmitted and evaluated by the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), which grants the approval or not. This test phase will last from summer 2020 to autumn 2022. For the tests, a provisional traffic authorization was granted by the FOT.

Description:  Gauge change installation. The train can pass with a speed of 15 kmh / 9.3 mph for chaning gauge. Other companies have also equipped their trains with variable bogies, such as the Spanish Talgo. However, the bogie designed by MOB and further developed by Alstom is the only one with such a strong widening (from 1 m to 1.435 m, i.e. by +43.5 %) and a simultaneous increase in the body of the car from 350 mm to 550 mm. No other bogie with variable track gauge is able to do this.

Description:  The bogie of the GoldenPass Express changes the track gauge within a few seconds and with the passengers on board. A total of eight minutes are required, including the locomotive change and the corresponding checks. However, changing track width and height is not the only hurdle. There is an electrical voltage difference between the MOB and BLS networks: 900 volts (direct current) on the metre-gauge network and 15 kV / 16.7 Hz (alternating current) on the standard gauge network. This requires a change of locomotives. They do not have variable bogies. In Zweisimmen, for example, the BLS locomotive hands over the wagon convoy to the MOB locomotive.
