MP Train No. 51 |
Description: |
Missouri Pacific (Gulf Coast Lines) train No. 51, the westbound ORLEANEAN, was crossing the intersection of Railroad Avenue (US 69-96-287) and College Street (US 90) in Beaumont, Texas, on its way from New Orleans to Houston. The train had just left the Kansas City Southern station, passed GCL JUNCTION and was about to enter home rails.GCL trains operated over 46.5 miles of the KCS between CS JUNCTION in DeQuincy, Louisiana and GCL JUNCTION here in Beaumont. At GCL JUNCTION, the KCS main line to Port Arthur headed south while the connection to the MP headed west. These trains also used 89.5 miles of trackage rights over the Illinois Central, between SOUTHPORT JUNCTION in New Orleans and MP JUNCTION in Baton Rouge. Trackage rights represented over one-third of the 368.4 mile-trip between New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and Union Station in Houston. The KCS NW2 on the right was switching some customers. Texas & Pacific E8A 30 |
Description: |
In this undated photo from the early 1960’s, Texas & Pacific E8A 30 and an unidentified F7B were parked on a ready track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. At this time, the MP-TP had recently introduced an all-blue paint scheme and a unified numbering system. The 30 was originally T&P 2010, the first of eight T&P E8A units; while the F7B was one of four such T&P units (881B-884B) equipped with steam generators and high-speed (77 MPH) gearing. These locomotives had arrived here in the morning on the LOUISIANA EAGLE, the overnight train from Fort Worth, and would be returning west that evening. F7’s were frequently used on this train until they were replaced by GP7’s. (date of photo unknown) |

T&P Train No. 22 |
Description: |
At 10:00 Texas & Pacific train No. 22, the last remnant of the LOUISIANA EAGLE, was stopped at the new station in Shreveport, on its way from Fort Worth to New Orleans. We don’t know when this photo was taken, but it was between 25 September 1967, when the sleeping car was discontinued, and 17 December 1969, when the train made its last run. The new station was opened in 1963 along the main line on West 70th Street, just south of the Greater Shreveport Municipal Airport and just west of CUT OFF JUNCTION. This eliminated a 6-mile detour from CUT OFF JUNCTION to the old station at 104 Market Street and then back again, which added 55 minutes to train schedules. Inbound trains were turned on the wye at TS&N JUNCTION, just before backing into the old station. TS&N was the Texarkana, Shreveport & Natchez, which originally owned the T&P line between Texarkana and Shreveport. (approximate date of photo) |

MP GP38-2 910 |
Description: |
Part of the "new" Louisville & Nashville line that was built from N.E. Tower to the Mississippi River as a part of the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal project literally ran through back yards. Missouri Pacific GP38-2's 910, 866 and 947 were heading from the L&N's Gentilly Yard to the MP's Race Street Yard at the intersection of North Dorgenois (on the left) and Montegut streets. The Southern Railway's Oliver Yard was two streets over on the left, and the Southern eventually acquired all of the land between its yard and the L&N track to expand its intermodal facility. This train had an L&N crew, and its caboose was Seaboard Coast Line 0754. |

MP SD40-2 6016 |
Description: |
Between 1976 and 1980 the Missouri Pacific purchased 74 SD40-2's for use on unit coal trains. The obvious difference from the railroad's other SD40-2's was the dynamic brake housing, but the first 20 units - such as this one - were also equipped with a nose-mounted oscillating light so as to be compatible with D&RGW power. These 20 units were delivered as the 3216-3235, and then renumbered 6000-6019 in May 1978, while the other 54 coal units were delivered new as the 6020-6073. All of them became Union Pacific 3900-3973. |

Missouri Pacific GP38-2's 2017 and 2050 are westbound along the Mississippi River on the New Orleans Public Belt at Jackson Avenue. The transfer run is on its way from Race Street Yard, located just below the bridge in the background; to Avondale Yard, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. The locomotives had arrived at Race Street Yard earlier in the day on Ft. Worth-New Orleans train FN.The track layout here is typical for this area of the riverfront. From left to right are the abandoned Illinois Central Gulf northbound main line, the still-active ICG southbound main, the west- and eastbound NOPB main tracks, the NOPB switching lead, and two NOPB wharf tracks. The siding leading off to the left across Tchoupitoulas Street ran down Josephine Street. Today, the IC tracks have been displaced by a concrete floodwall, and there is only one NOPB track. All of the others have been replaced by the Clarence Henry Truckway. |

MP Train HNS |
Description: |
Missouri Pacific train HNS -- en route from Houston to the Southern Railway in New Orleans and then on to Birmingham as train 114 -- passes the MP's 'Four Deuces' at the south end of the Addis Yard. The train's motive power is really unusual, a pair of the Southern's six GP49's: 4603T and 4605H. These units were normally used in trios, so something must have happened to one of the train's locomotives. |

UP Super Bowl Special |
Description: |
Union Pacific GP40X units 954 and 959 were eastbound on the Illinois Central entering New Orleans with a special train for Super Bowl XXIV, which was played at the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME. The 9-car train was passing through SOUTHPORT JUNCTION on its way from the Huey P. Long Bridge to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and was about to cross Hoey’s Canal. The second car was crossing a Kansas City Southern line from that railroad’s WEST YARD (just off to the right) to a connection with the New Orleans Public Belt. The train consisted of power car 206, office car KENEFICK, crew sleeper NORTH PLATTE, deluxe sleepers OMAHA, WYOMING and POWDER RIVER, dome-lounge HARRIMAN, and office cars SELMA and ARDEN. The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55–10. |

CSX Q-601 |
Description: |
CSX train Q-601 was on its way from the railroad’s GENTILLY YARD to the Union Pacific’s AVONDALE YARD via the Norfolk Southern, and it was stopped at Bayou St. John behind NS No. 393. It was powered by GP60 5777 (ex-SSW 9675) and SEVEN yellow UP units: SD40-2s: 3602, 3571, 3248, 3839 and 3656 with C40-8 9135 and C40-8W 9426. Because there were more eastbound trains than westbound, it was not unusual for trains moving from the CSX to the UP to have two sets of power such as this. |

Missouri Pacific Freight House |
Description: |
Franklin is the Seat of St. Mary Parish, and is on the former Espee SUNSET ROUTE; but up until 1980 it was also served by the Missouri Pacific. After 1970 the MP used trackage rights over the SP to get here from New Iberia, and on to the end of their branch at Garden City. |

Right-of-Way |
Description: |
The Missouri Pacific abandoned its track from New Iberia east to Garden City in 1970, in favor of trackage rights over the Espee's parallel SUNSET ROUTE, and these trackage rights were abandoned in 1980. This line had been built by the Iberia, St. Mary & Eastern and this view, facing northwest, shows where the MP track had been on the median of West Third Street in Franklin, Louisiana. Franklin is the Seat of St. Mary Parish. |
