Looking west from the former EL depot we see only the former eastbound. The westbound and a track down the hill to the right that serviced at least 3 industries, notably Ohio Match Company, are gone.

Description:  One night on our way west we smacked a car here. The drawbar penetrated the passenger door. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, had slid across the bench seat and sustained 8 broken ribs. He would recover. The twist was that his wife and baby daughter were in the car behind him, trying to get his attention because she saw us coming. You can imagine what could have happened.

Description:  Credit Jim Morrison. At least there seems to be a future for this track with all these ties being replaced. Oh wait, maybe not. We installed welded rail between Rittman and Barberton in March 1976. We all know what happened April 1st. 1976.

Description:  I'm standing on E. Bergey Rd. If you couldn't hold the main, you couldn't switch this place. Most often both tracks needed to be switched. 2 or 3 cars in each track sometimes needed to be reversed, as they didn't always need the whole load at that time. You are looking down the steepest part of Silver Creek hill.

Directly across from IMC is the switch to what used to be Barefoot Sole.

Description:  Makers of shoe soles. The track used to run off the westbound siding. Today, it runs off the former eastbound. I am level with the track at IMC, so as you look at this picture you can see the grade that trains had to contend with.

Description:  Coming off the siding onto this industrial spur, you would see the engine first, then the car/s. Using the tail track to pass the switch we would then shove toward the building. The tree obscures the line of sight.

Description:  Today it's Blue Tip Industrial Park. We used to have to unlock the gate before we could switch. If memory serves, there were 4 tracks in here. (Not my regular beat.) On at least two of them we had to double spot cars. That way the unloaders could unload both cars from the same building door. One of the tracks extended out along the far building and across SR94, aka Main St.

Description:  If you can picture a switchback, that's how the tracks were laid out here. A trailing point crossover from west to eastbound, then a facing point crossover into the yard. Then 2 trailing point switches for tracks 4 and the tank track. Track 5 extended to the left of this building.

Description:  It looks like an alien abduction. According to a Wadsworth Township trustee, the property has been in receivership for a tax debt for at least 20 years. Different individuals have expressed interest in the property, but so far, nothing has solidified.

Description:  You can see the switch timbers ahead. The trailing point crossover from west to east is the reason for the stick rail. When that was removed, it was simply replaced with various lenghts. Welded rail starts again beyond the switch and continues west to Rittman. When we finished switching, we shoved our train toward the camera and ran the engine back in the clear, and lined the switch for the main. Then we'd bleed the brakes and ride the handbrakes down the hill past the switch. Then we could couple on our train and proceed east. The 2006 Google Imagery showed the tracks still in place.

Description:  EL also tried to celebrate the country's 200th anniversary. Bicentennial 3638 an SDP45 leads eastbound hotshot 2nd New York 100, all UPS, past Wadsworth depot. No more will such a scene be repeated in this Boneyard. Thanks for your interest.
