All of CB&Q's GP7's and GP's were delivered in this black paint scheme, termed "Blackbirds" by CB&Q employees. In 1959, the red "Redbirds" paint scheme was introduced on C&S SD9 #828, returned to EMD for wreck repairs, and repainted in red. The first new power to wear the red scheme were the SD24's, delivered in 1959.
