IC Train No. 25 |
Description: |
At around 10 a.m. Illinois Central mail-and-express train No. 25 – the SOUTHERN EXPRESS – was pulling up to the station at Hammond Louisiana behind 4-8-2 2431. Despite its name, No. 25 was anything but an express, taking 23 hours and 10 minutes to cover the 921 miles between Chicago and New Orleans. Visible above the train’s last cars was the Hammond coal tower, from which Coal Shoot (sic) Road got its name. The wooden caboose on the right was the 9231. |

IC 2500 "Mountain" Class Engine |
Description: |
One of only two remaining 2500 class "Mountains" from the Illinois Central Railroad is preserved on static display at Centralia's Fairview Park. The locomotive is maintained by the Age of Steam Memorial non-profit organization. It is veiwed here from West Broadway prior to the building of a roof to protect it. The 2500 series were built at the IC Paducah shops from older IC 2-10-2 boilers originally built by Lima. #2500 was delivered in 1938. She was saved from the scrapper in 1962. Behind her, there is a USAF T-33 or T-bird trainer based on the Lockheed F-80. Image is Tri-X Pan, taken with a Pentax K1000. |

Displayed IC 2500 4-8-2 Mountain Steam Locomotive |
Description: |
This engine was recently repainted by volunteers and the CN. IC Paducah Shops rebuilt 2-10-2 #2953 into this 4-8-2 using the old boiler and a new Granite City Steel engine bed. The 30" x 30" cylinders and the air reservoirs are cast into the frame. It was dedicated here on 10-5-62, and the shelter was built in 1992. She weighs 635,000 pounds when road ready, and 450,000 when sitting here empty. Thanks to the guys here for showing me around. |

Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2503 |
Description: |
This is an example of one of the IC Paducah Shops rebuilds from older IC 2-10-2 locos done between 1937-43. This 2500 class was based on the original Alco "Mountain" type locos built in 1923. They had 70" drivers and developed an impressive 240 psi boiler pressure. C. W. Burns captured this brute under the coaling tower at Markham, IL - reprint is from May, 1970. |
