BM #4000 - Boston & Maine, The "Cobra Hooded" Coffin Heater Model |
Description: |
One of the more unusual feedwater configurations is this "cobra hooded" Coffin type. Not sure why the photo is labeled "Schenectady Locomotive Works" at the bottom unless it was visiting for some reason since this was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio in 1928. It had 63" drivers and could develop an impressive 240 psi of boiler pressure for its 28"x30" cylinders and produced a respectable 66,500 lb of tractive effort but according to several sources, Boston & Maine were unhappy with its performance - leakages and derailing often when backing. During WWII, Boston & Maine sold their problems to Southern Pacific and Santa Fe who were in dire need of power out west. Date and location are approximate. No photographer listed. |

BM 2-8-4 #4001 - Boston & Maine |
Description: |
Fair quality older photo of the cobra hooded Boston & Maine 2-8-4 Berkshire #4001. Built by the Lima Locomotive Works in May of 1928, this class of Berkshires had the curved Coffin feedwater heater which was labeled a "cobra-hood." B&M had problems with their trailing trucks and articulated "wiggling" that caused leakages around the firebox. During the closing months of World War II, the western railroads were in dire need of motive power to handle the shift in material and personnel from the European front to the war in the Pacific. The Boston & Maine was never really satisfied with its Lima built "Berkshires" and jumped at the chance to help the war effort and to unload its "lemons". The B&M sold ten "Berkshires" to the Southern Pacific and seven to the Santa Fe. This loco was sold in July of 1945 to ATSF and renumbered ATSF 4193 (ATSF class 4193). The loco was sold for scrap on 11/11/1949 to the Purdy Co. Specs - serial #7278, class T-1-a, 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 393,000 lb, tractive effort of 66,550 lb. No date or location was given for this photo so an approximate was used. Unknown photographer |

BM 2-8-4 #4001 "Cobra hooded" - Boston & Maine |
Description: |
An interesting feature of this 1928 Lima built 2-8-4 Berkshire was the Coffin feedwater heater that circled the crown of the smoke box, nicknamed the "cobra-hooded" look. Eventually this loco was sold to the ATSF in 1945 and renumbered ATSF 4193. Note on back of photo states - " B.&M. 4001 (2-8-4) arriving in W.R. Juct. From Boston." Specs - T-1a class, 63" drivers, 240 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders. No date or photographer was listed. |

BM 2-8-4 #4006 - Boston & Maine (Cobra hooded) |
Description: |
Nice original action shot of the of the unusual and problem plagued 1928 Lima built 2-8-4 Berkshire for the Boston and Maine. One unique feature was the "Cobra Hood" Coffin feedwater heater that wrapped as a collar around the smokebox. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "From the beginning, the B&M had problems with their Lima built "Berkshires". The problem was with the trailing four-wheel truck. Because of the large firebox and large ash pan the locomotive had to have an articulated frame. The back end of the firebox had to rest on a moving base and it was subject to buffeting and twisting, resulting in chronic leakage at the mud ring, side sheet stay bolts and the throat sheet, as it tried to wiggle from side to side to follow the motion of the trucks. Also, this arrangement would sometimes cause the rear wheels to derail while backing up." Eventually ten in the class were sold to SP and 7 were sold to ATSF in July of 1945. Specs - 63" drivers, 28"x30" cylinders, 240 psi, engine weight of 406,900 lb, tractive effort of 76,160 lb. |

BM 2-8-4 #4010 - Boston & Maine |
Description: |
Built by Lima in May of 1928, this 2-8-4 Berkshire built for the Boston & Maine had the unique "cobra-hooded" (Coffin) feedwater heater around its front plate. The B&M sold ten "Berkshires" to the Southern Pacific and seven to the Santa Fe. .In July of 1945 this loco was sold to Southern Pacific to become their SP #3505 (SP class B-1) It went into revenue service on August 17, 1945. The loco only lasted about 6 years before being "vacated" in July of 1951 at Bakersfield, CA and sold for scrap in September of 1951. Specs - serial #7287, class T-1-a, 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 393,000 lb, tractive effort of 66,550 lb. Payne photo |

BM #4018 - Boston & Maine, The "Cobra-Hooded" Coffin Model |
Description: |
Like its sister #4000 in this album, this unusual "cobra hooded" Coffin feedwater heater equipped locomotive was an unusual sight. Built by Lima in 1928, this class T1a Berkshire-type locomotive had 63" drivers, generated an impressive 240 psi of boiler pressure for its 28"30" cylinders, had an engine wieght of 406,900 lb, and could produce a respectable tractive effort of 76,160 lb. With all of that however, Boston & Maine had problems with the class from the very beginning - mostly due to the trailing 4 wheel turck which caused twisting motion on curves that produced leakages and often resulted in derailing when backing. B&M sold the class to Southern Paciifc and Santa Fe during WWII. No photographer listed for this photo. The day in 1938 is an approximation. |

Unfortunately this poor quality photo barely shows the unique Boston & Maine "cobra-hooded" Berkshire built by Lima in 1928. Description: |
Wearing the unique "cobra-hooded" semi-circular water heater collar in front (Coffin feedwater heater), this 2-8-4 Berkshire was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in September of 1929 for the Boston & Maine. Although not well received by the B&M for several problems with the trailing truck and articulation, the loco served nearly 22 years before it was retired and scrapped in June of 1951. Specs - serial #7375, class T-1-b, 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 403,000 lb, tractive effort of 68,990 lb. Arthur B. Johnson photo |

Illinois Central 2-8-4 #8005 |
Description: |
C. W. Burns shot this photo of the massive 2-8-4 Lima Berkshire which had already gone through an IC Paducah shops rebuilding and renumbering. The IC called this group "Limas" instead of Berkshires but most engineers on the line called them "Big Mikes". C. W. Burns noted on the back of the photo "This class was used on the I.C. Lines west and I never saw one." He also incorrectly identified the location as Bluford, IA instead of Bluford, IL. |
