New Acquisitions At RJ Corman's Lexington Yard |
Description: |
RJ Corman recently took delivery of 6 former Progress Rail Leasing/Norfolk Southern EMD SD70Ms as lately they have been seeking replacements for their EMD SD40T-2s "Tunnelmotors" used on their ALCAN and Sand Trains running between Memphis Junction, Kentucky to Bowling Green, Kentucky along with Lexington, Kentucky to Louisville, Kentucky respectively. They began using GMTX leased SD60s that were former "Suzie Q" nee EMDX/Oakway Leasing EMD SD60s they were used until September of 2022 when they were placed in storage at RJ Corman's Lexington Yard awaiting return to their leaser GMTX most likely. I'd say that once they send these 6 SD70Ms through the paint shops they will likely be placed into service replacing the Tunnelmotors sometime in 2023 or 2024. |

ATSF 2-10-2 #3014 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
This loco has an interesting history. In 1911, the ATSF Shops in Topeka cobbled together ten sets of 2-10-10-2 "Santa Fe Mallets" each from two 2-10-2 locos. The massive 2-10-10-2 Mallets were not sucessful so in 1915-17, the ATSF shops broke them apart into 2-10-2's. The newly formed rear half of the 2-10-10-2's were renumbered 3010-3019 while the front half were renumbered 3020-3029. This loco seen here is one of the rear half 2-10-2's made. New specs - 57" driverds, 28x32" cylinders, 200 psi boiler pressure, and produced 74,824 lb of tractive effort. The rear group weighed 293,000 lb while the front group weighed 302,490 lb. The newly rebuilt 2-10-2's were scrapped between 1939-1952. No photographer, date, or location was given for the photo. This is one of the rear halves of the split Mallet. |

ATSF 2-10-2 #3290 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
This loco had an interesting life. In 1911, the ATSF Shops in Topeka, KS, cobbled together two 2-10-2 locos to make a massive 2-10-10-2 "Santa Fe Mallet". Unfortunately it was not sucessful so between 1915-17, the Shops broke the loco apart into separate 2-10-2's again. This was one of the rear halves and was renumbered first as ATSF 2-10-2 #3016. It was renumbered in 1952 to ATSF 3290 just before being retired. No photographer, date, or location was given for the photo so the date and location are approximate guesses. |

This photo taken by Arthur B. Johnson appears to have captured CN #4322 sitting in a storage line in the Transcona yard. Built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in July of 1930, this 2-10-2 Santa Fe type steam locomotive with its small drivers but large tractive effort would have been an ideal fit for long drags of freight. This powerful loco met its final date with the scrapper's torch on April of 1959. Specs - serial #1882, class T-4-b, 57" drivers, impressive 275 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" cylinders, engine weight of 347,600 lb, decent tractive effort of 66,139 lb. Arthur B Johnson photo |

Long before an SD40-2 wore the number "5787", this 2-10-2 Santa Fe type steam locomotive had the honor on the Canadian Pacific roster. Original specs - class S2, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26.5x32" cylindeers, engine weight of 362,000 lb, tractive effort of 65,866 lb. The entire class of 15 locos were retired between 1952-54. Finally! |
Description: |
JiTong Railway QJ-Class 2-10-2 #6911 comes around the horseshoe curve outside Lindong, Inner Mongolia, at 60 mph, turning into the setting sun and the 50-mph winds in the high country with the last regularly-scheduled, steam-powered standard-gauge revenue passenger train in the world. We had tried to get this shot for 4 days--and the 4th was a charm! |
