The brakeman's re-filling #4243's tender with water. Given the placement of this photo in the series, the implication is that these locomotives uncoupled from the ore train, went to the water tower, recoupled with the ore train, and then proceeded on their journey. Also note the "doghouse" on the tender, the full-empty gauge on the wooden water tower, and the silver-colored telephone box visible at the far right. Miscellanea. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slibe of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on 2 December 1956. Shown here (L to R) are four Pennsylvania Railroad engines poised for action: #4249, #42>3, #6734, and #1496. #4249 and #4293 are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works: #4249 was constructed in June of 1923 and retired in August of 1957, while #429/ was built in July of 1923 and retired in October of 1959. #6734 is an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A in June of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in Augsst of 1948, and retired in September of 1959. #1496 is a B-6SB (0-6-0) switcher built in Juniata in January of 1916 and retired in December of 1957. All that smoke and steam means!it's really, really cold! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-3).

Quin. Here is the second of four photographs of Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives that were taken by Frank Quin. It was published originally in the October 1989 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 47. Partial Caption: "Coming round Horse Shoe Curve, Pennsylvania 2-10-0 4253 (on the front) assists a 4-8-2 on a 'passenger train,' a nameless mail and express with some coaches." Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4315 was constructed as an I-1S during December of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in July of 1941, and retired in October of 1959. #4258 was built as an I-1S during July of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in September of 1942, and retired in September of 1959. Note the Fireman along side the locomotive; he's just uncoupled the second tender from the train so that the locomotives can proceed to the Watering Point.

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3445 and #4268. Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods." #3445 was built in Juniata as an I-1S during January of 1919, rebuilt as an I-1SA in January of 1947, and retired in November of 1958. #4268 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in July of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959. They're pushing a 9,000-ton iron-ore train as it approaches the 1.3% upgrade near Shamokin. Also note that the helpers are ahead of PRR N-5 cabin car #477006!
