Description: |
A soft image of Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 class S-2-A 2923 at Bigelow, Missouri on an unknown date in 1941, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. The print was marked : Mail Train, Bissell, MO c. 1941. I could not find Bissell, MO, but did find Bigelow, MO and it was on the CB&Q, so that's what I chose. Number 2923 was built by Baldwin in 1910 (c/n 34686) as a class S-2, rebuilt by the CB&Q in 1927 to class S-2-A, sold for scrap in January 1951. |

CBQ 4-6-2 #2951 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy |
Description: |
Here is a 1915 Baldhin built Pacific (class S-3) sitting in the afternoon sun with its Art Deco style tender. It had tall 74" drivers, developed a 200 psi boiler pressure for its 27"x28" cylinders ang had an engine weight of 278,600 lb. It could apply a tractive effort of 46,892 lb> According to SteamLocomotives website, "They represented a revamped Pacific design with a new shorter boiler, combustiom chamber, and brick arch. Other improvements were lighter, heat-treated steel alloy reciprocating parts, hollow-bore piston rods and crank pins, and the Laird suspended crosshead, Ragonneu power reverser, and eventually a Worthington or Elesco feedwater heater." |

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960 on Train #9 at Sand Creek, Colorado on June 11, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. I'm hoping that Larkspur is close to Sand Creek, which is how the print is marked. Number 2960 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42160) and sold for scrap in July 1952. At some point it acquired a Worthington feedwater heater, it wasn't delivered with one. Fifteen Class S-3 Pacific types were built by Baldwin in 1915 (road #'s 2950-2964) and an additional ten were built in 1918 (road #'s 2965-2974). Additionally, in 1922 two more S-3 design locomotives were built for the FW&DC (road #'s 556-557) and three for the C&S (road #'s 373-375, class F-3C). The C&S also acquired (around 1936) CB&Q 2970, 2973, and 2965, becoming C&S 370, 371, and 372 respectively, classed F-3B. The three Class F-3C locomotives built for the C&S had 69 inch drivers (as opposed to the 74 inch drivers on the CB&Q locomotives), which were better suited to C&S grades and resulted in a tractive force increase from the stock 42,400 lb. to 44,000 lb.. . |

Number 2961 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42161) and sold for scrap in December 1952. It appears to have been converted to burn oil, I do not know the date of that conversion. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2974 at Denver, Colordao on July 23, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the final Pacific type delivered by Baldwin to the CB&Q. Number 2974 was built in 1918 (c/n 49075) and sold for scrap in August 1951. Two unsubstantiated observations; it appears to be an oil burner, I don't believe it was delivered that way, and it appears to have an extended smokebox, possibly indicating that it was once a lignite coal burner. |

Eastbound ASV Passenger Train - ATSF 3415 |
Description: |
Santa Fe 3415 rolls the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad's 2 P.M. train in from Abilene right on time at a blazing 10 MPH. The 91 year old steamer is a 4-6-2 Pacific Type and was built in June 1919 by Baldwin, and carries the Builders Number of 51861. The 3415 frequented the Santa Fe between Kansas City and La Junta, CO in its day, and operated at speeds of up to 100 MPH. She was retired in 1955 and was placed on display in Eisenhower Park in Abilene, KS April, 1996 when it was moved to the ASV. Restoration started in 2005 and was completed in early 2009. The engine runs about once a month. Otherwise, the ASV 4, an ALCO S1 runs the train. |

Looks Like the 1940s |
Description: |
The rear end brakeman takes the markers off the caboose as the train rolls to a stop at the old Rock Island Depot site in Enterprise. This could almost pass for a day in the 1940s. |

Santa Fe 3415 |
Description: |
One slick looking engine. The ASV Volunteers did a fantastic job restoring the engine with the limited resources and shop space they had. Excellent job indeed. |

Westbound ASV Passenger Train |
Description: |
Running tender first, the Santa Fe 4-6-2 heads back towards Abilene with this afternoon's train. A lot of people don't like seeing steam engines run tender first, when in reality steamers ran backwards quite a bit on branch line operations when there was no turning facility at the end of the route. The train shown isn't a bad representation for a mixed freight of days gone by. |

Westbound ASV Passenger Train |
Description: |
Since the train is running only 10 MPH, I figured I'd attempt a pan shot to get that nice balls out hauling ass effect. Hard to believe that this thing used to run 90 MPH faster than this on a regular basis. |

ATSF 3415 Back in the Shop |
Description: |
Santa Fe 3415 begins to cool down in the shop after today's runs. The no diesel locomotives allowed sign is a nice touch. Although the diesel that shoved it into the barn isn't much to sneeze at--a 1945 ALCO S1. |

51861 |
Description: |
Santa Fe 3415 carries Baldwin Locomotive Works Builders Number 51861 on her builders plate. The engine only carries one plate these days, but hopefully they can come up with another. I was told that she would get a bath at some point to make that glossy black paint shine, but for now this workhorse quietly cools down in her sauna-like enginehouse after a day of earning an honest living again. |
