ATSF 4-6-2 #3504 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
The photo is a sad one of ATSF #3504 with tender #1320 sitting in the dead/scrap line in the Albuquerque Yard. This locomotive was built by Baldwin in February of 1914 originally as a 4-cylinder balanced compound Pacific type locomotive but was later converted to a simple arrangement in November, 1921 at the Topeka Shops. The loco served for nearly 35 years before being sold for scrap to Luria Brothers Company on 11/17/1949. Note that in this photo the loco has tender #1320 - not sure why. An unnknown photographer took this photo while it sat near the end of its life. |

ATSF 4-6-2 #3508 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
Although a later ATSF GP38 would carry this number, the original belongs to this 1914 Baldwin Locomotive Works Pacific type loco. It was an ATSF class 3500 member with tall 73" drivers and developed a boiler pressure of 210 psi. It's tractive force was a respectable 30,741 lb. Although originally built as a compound design, it was simplified in 1921 by Santa Fe shops and increased to 220 psi. The entire class was retired between 1940-55. Date is approximate. Baltimore & Ohio 4-6-2 #5052 |
Description: |
Normally heading up passenger service for the B&O, this Pacific is shuffling freight on this day in 1951. Probably bumped from passenger revenue by those upcoming diesels! No location was provided and only the year so the location and day are arbitrary. |
