Amtrak's no.3, the Super Chief, slows to a stop at New Mexico's biggest city in July 1973. The SDP40Fs were still brand new- having been delivered only the preceeding month. 18 cars trail; a collection of former Santa Fe Hi-Levels and what would later be called "Heritage" cars from UP, ATSF and SP. As replacements for the motley collection of Es and Fs that Amtrak had started with the SDP40Fs were viewed by most as a sign that Amtrak was off on the right foot. Few, if any, could've forseen their coming problems and the black cloud they were retired under only a few years later. |
