Built in 1953 by Budd in Lot #9601-135 as AT&SF baggage-express-messenger #3518, 1 of 40 such cars (#3500-#3539) built in that Lot, which was ordered in September 1952; cars were delivered between June and December 1953. In 1971, Amtrak acquired 34 of the 40 cars as #1020-#1053; the #3518 as #1034. Between 1977 and 1980, Amtrak converted 33 of the 34 cars to HEP; the #1034 was converted to #1237 in November 1977.
