UP #5412
Built in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6844 to Plan #7617 as UP 44 seat leg rest chair #5412, 1 of 50 such cars (#5400-#5449) built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1948; cars were delivered between June and September 1950. Besides the #5400 which was sold in 1951 to the Wabash (as #1431) and the #5446-#5449 which were rebuilt to business cars, UP sold the remaining 45 cars between 1969-1971. In 1969, 11 cars (including the #5412) were sold to GTW and converted to commuter coaches #4807-#4817, with either 74, 84, or 92 seats. The #5412 was converted to GTW #4807, with 74 seats. In 1977, the GTW commuter fleet was transferred to the new Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority (SEMTA), including these 11 cars, which retained the #48xx-series numbers. When SEMTA ended operations in 1983, 10 of these 11 cars were sold to Ringling Brothers; the #5412/#4807 was the only car not sold to Ringling. It was acquired by Artrain at an unknown date and converted to a display car. Artrain later acquired several Budd cars for a new trainset, and the old trainset, including the #5412, 2 B&O heavyweight coaches, and an ex-AT&SF baggage formerly owned by Ice Capades went to IRM. Under SEMTA, at least 2 of these 11 cars received names, at this time I have no info regarding the application of a name to the #5412/#4807.
